Melbourne Face to Face Event - Focused on Facades

Join us in Melbourne for an engaging face-to-face CPD event featuring four formal CPD presentations focused on façade innovation, sustainability, and high-performance building design. Connect with fellow architects, designers, engineers, and industry professionals while gaining valuable insights from leading experts in the field.

Enjoy an afternoon of technical learning, industry discussion, and networking in the inspiring showroom environment of Metz Collingwood.

Energy Efficient Design

Presented by Rado Botev

This CPD presentation explores the key principles of energy-efficient façade design and the critical role the building envelope plays in reducing operational energy demand. It examines how façade strategies such as continuous insulation, solar control, airtightness and ventilated rainscreen systems can improve building performance, occupant comfort and long-term durability. The presentation also highlights the importance of integrated design, climate-responsive strategies and future-ready façade systems that support evolving energy standards and the transition to low-carbon, all-electric buildings.

At the end of this presentation attendees will be able to understand:

  • Understand the role of façade design in building energy performance
  • Identify key façade strategies for energy-efficient buildings
  • Apply climate-responsive façade design principles
  • Recognize the importance of integrated design
  • Design façades that support long-term building performance

Photovoltaic Glass for Buildings (BiPV)

Presented by Enver Kolac

It is unjust to call Building Integrated Photovoltaics just solar panels and it is partial to compare only one aspect of a BiPV solution with a rooftop system. Building Integrated Photovoltaics opens the “think outside the box” concept for the designers to be able to utilise photovoltaics in areas where they never thought it would have been possible. Customisable characteristics of Photovoltaic Glass with various sizes, shapes, forms, and configurations incorporating insulating values, shading coefficients and never before seen or even thought of possible colours (white, corten steel) will allow incorporation of photovoltaic solutions in many applications. Thinking about facades, cladding, skylights, shading elements, walkable floor tiles, canopies? Think about Building Integrated Photovoltaics.

At the end of this presentation attendees will be able to understand:

  • Explaining the difference between the types of photovoltaic technologies.
  • Understanding the components involved in a PV system.
  • Understanding the differences between a std PV panel and a building integrated photovoltaic solutions
  • Understanding the capabilities and fixing requirements of BiPV systems.
  • Learning about the capabilities of Photovoltaic Glass.

IT’S ALL A FAÇADE: Next Generation Façades

Presented by Jesse Clarke

“It’s All a Façade - Next Generation Façades” challenges the industry to rethink the way building envelopes are designed and delivered. Moving beyond the idea of cladding as a decorative outer layer, this presentation reframes the façade as a high-performance environmental control system responsible for managing rain, air, vapour, and thermal performance. Through clear examples and practical building-science insights, the presentation unpacks how modern rainscreen façades actually function — highlights the critical role of concealed control layers, ventilated cavities and properly integrated air and water barriers in creating durable, resilient buildings.

Drawing on real-world façade failures and industry experience, Clarke emphasises the importance of system thinking, coordinated design and rigorous performance verification to manage moisture risks in building envelopes. His message is direct: most failures are not caused by the visible cladding, but by poorly understood layers behind it and weak interfaces between trades. The session leaves delegates with a clear takeaway — if the industry wants buildings that remain dry, healthy and durable, we must move beyond product thinking and deliver fully engineered façade systems grounded in building physics.

At the end of this presentation attendees will be able to understand:

  • The limitations of flexible membrane in high rise facades.
  • Understand how WRBs (Sarking) are designed and installed to manage moisture.
  • Why rigid air barriers may be required to support the membranes in façade design and what properties of rigid air barriers are desirable.
  • The reasons for a well-sealed weather barrier for pressure equalised façade systems.
  • The role the cladding plays in a rainscreen façade.
  • The two key ways that condensation can be managed in façade assemblies, exterior insulation or interior vapour control layers.

Designing High-Performance Facades: Spec the Edge

Presented by Vince Wardill

Have you ever wondered why we are so reliant in Australia on Air-Conditioning in Summer and Heating in Winter?

The frame of a window has a significant impact on the overall energy efficiency of any window and door – including that of double-glazed systems.

While double glazing is seen as a benchmark for energy efficiency, to select double glazing with a standard aluminium frame is only going halfway to achieving a high performing energy efficient window.

We expand on this topic and explain how important glazing is in the building envelope and to make our built indoor environment comfortable.

At the end of this presentation attendees will be able to understand:

  • What material is used for Thermal Breaks typically in the Window Industry.
  • What are the benefits of High-Performance Glazing?
  • What effect the edge and glazing has on the thermal comfort of our buildings.
  • Why it’s so important to Specify the Edge of your Glazed Component within the building envelope.
